Respite: A Special Home for Discriminating People
|
Nestled in a secluded, serene location in the rural, friendly community of Diamond Point, 14 miles from Sequim, Washington, this unique solidly constructed 2 bedroom round house lies two hundred feet above Discovery Bay, with water and mountain views from the kitchen, great room and deck.
At the opening of Discovery Bay are Protection Island Wildlife Reserve, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Whidbey Island and Mount Baker. At night the twinkle of lights from Becket Point can be seen through the trees, and across the bay the lights of Cape George define the far shore. Enjoy spectacular sunrises, while sunsets to the northeast are a treat.
A walking tour of the house...the lower level
Coming through the 40-inch wide door into the slate floor floored foyer, the first things to catch your eyes are the massive staircase and the plant filled sunken planter, with space enough to install an elevator in the future.
Large windows provide a pleasant inviting space, which includes a convenient phone outlet and TV jack.
Adjoining the reception hall is the guest room with a rock garden view. There is ample room for a king sized bed, sitting area, TV and desk. Next to the guest room is a bathroom with vanity, shower and toilet alcove.
The multi-use entertainment room is large enough to house a home theater, exercise room, library, billiards room, or a combination of activities.
The wood stove serves as a backup cook stove and heats the entire house. Loose-laid wool carpeting covers most of the entertainment room. Along one wall is a cedar closet, and behind mirrored sliding doors is a ten-foot long by 34-inch deep fitted closet.
A walking tour of the house...the upper level
Ascending the stairs along the track lighted wall, ideal for art display or family pictures, you arrive at the great room with its 14-foot high ceiling with a paddle fan.
The various areas of the great room labeled, as "Rooms" have no dividing walls. An inlaid strip of rosewood delineates the living room from the rest of the great room.
The Kitchen has a fourteen-foot island with three different counter heights. On the island are a ceramic electric cooktop with Braun downdraft hood, a built-in Nutone Food Center (under an overhead pot rack/plant rack and an operable skylight above), and double brass bar sinks.
The eleven feet of island in the dining area plus nearly five feet on the end allow comfortable seating space for 6 to 8 bar stools.
Custom kitchen cabinets have maple and cherry doors and drawer fronts, custom walnut drawer pulls and a four-foot wide built-in china cupboard with antique leaded glass doors.
At the end of the kitchen is a four-foot wide custom fitted pantry cabinet. A Swanstone sink with hot water dispenser is across from the cooktop. The countertops are crafted from marble salvaged from a late 19th century home. Full extension drawer slides and spice and utensil drawers under the cooktop add to the ease of working in this kitchen.
The Back Entry has a French Door opening onto the rear deck, with three steps leading down to back yard.
A small closet adjoins the entry. The Powder Room/Laundry contains a washer, dryer, sink cabinet with laundry tub and washbasin, and a toilet alcove.
Family/Dining Area: The area between the kitchen and living room, extending to the stairwell and the three seven-foot wide sliding doors opening onto the deck can be arranged to suit the buyers' preferences.
Two TV outlets give flexibility in furniture arrangement while outside the sliding doors 380 sq. ft. of deck form an extension of the living space.
The Living Room looks out on the garden and the State Park through two windows flanking a Dovre cast iron fireplace and a lovingly restored antique cherry mantelpiece salvaged from a pre-1900 home.
Master Suite
The bedroom has room for a sitting area, TV, and office. A seven-foot sliding door opening onto the deck provides a forest view.
The bath has a jetted tub, 4' wide shower, double vanity and small exercise nook with a patio door opening onto the deck. The large window over the tub offers a garden and forest view.
No grass to mow, second growth forest, the majority undisturbed, covered by a canopy of cedar, Douglas-fir, grand fir, hemlock, madrone (Arbutus), alder, wild cherry trees plus one big leaf maple tree, with an under story of salal, Oregon grape, huckleberry, ocean spray and bracken ferns.
The landscaping is low maintenance: rhododendron, juniper, arborvitae, and Japanese maple, incense cedar, deodar and holly trees. The ground is covered with weed cloth and cedar chips and pebbles.
Behind the house on the upper level a garden of
rhodendrons, evergreens, cotoneaster, pieris,
Japanese blood grass, flax, irises and fall crocus.
backs up to the forest. Trails wind throughout the garden and forest.
